Acne Treatment

Acne is a medical condition that affects patients of all ages, skin types, and backgrounds—not just teenagers. At Lucid Dermatology, we treat acne with a clinical, personalized approach that targets the underlying causes, not just surface symptoms.

Our board-certified providers combine medical expertise, prescription therapies, and advanced in-office treatments to deliver clear, lasting results while minimizing the risk of scarring.

Why Over-the-Counter Products Often Aren’t Enough

Many patients come to us after trying over-the-counter treatments without success. OTC products often can’t address deeper inflammation, hormonal triggers, or resistant acne that requires medical intervention.

Acne frequently returns when treatment targets only one factor rather than addressing oil production, inflammation, bacteria, and hormones together. That’s why long-term results require a structured, multi-layered plan—and why some patients achieve lasting remission while others need ongoing maintenance care.

Types of Acne Treated

We address various types of acne at Lucid Dermatology, including:

  • Acne Vulgaris: The most common form with blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
  • Hormonal Acne: Breakouts triggered by hormonal fluctuations and imbalances. This type often appears along the jawline and chin, flares cyclically, and is more resistant to basic skincare—requiring targeted medical treatment.
  • Cystic Acne: Deep, painful, pus-filled lesions beneath the skin surface. These carry a higher risk of scarring compared to surface-level breakouts.
  • Nodular Acne: Large, hard, painful bumps deep under the skin.
  • Papular Acne: Small, red, tender bumps without pus.
  • Pustular Acne: Pus-filled pimples with white or yellow centers.
  • Comedonal Acne: Non-inflammatory blackheads and whiteheads from clogged pores. Blackheads are open, clogged pores exposed to air, while whiteheads are closed, clogged pores beneath the skin surface.
  • Inflammatory Acne: Red, swollen, painful breakouts with inflammation.
  • Fungal Acne: Yeast overgrowth causes uniform, itchy bumps. This condition requires antifungal treatment rather than traditional acne medications, making proper diagnosis essential.
  • Adult-Onset Acne: Breakouts appearing after age 25 in adults.
  • Acne Mechanica: Friction, heat, or pressure-induced breakouts.
  • Acne Conglobata: Severe form with interconnected nodules and abscesses.

What to Expect From Acne Treatment at Lucid Dermatology

Every new acne patient begins with a thorough dermatologic assessment. We examine your skin, review your history, and identify the factors contributing to your breakouts.

From the first visit, we identify your acne pattern, underlying drivers, and risk factors for scarring or pigmentation. Our process includes:

  • A Clinical Skin Examination: To assess acne type, severity, and distribution.
  • Reviewing Medical & Treatment History: To review prior therapies and current medications.
  • Discussing Hormonal & Lifestyle Factors: Identify triggers influencing breakouts. Diet, stress, and lifestyle habits can significantly influence acne severity and recurrence.
  • Lab work & Treatment Routine Evaluation: To investigate internal contributors and optimize routines.

There isn’t one acne treatment—there’s the right one for you. We customize every plan based on your acne type, skin tone, and goals.

Treatment Timeline & What to Expect

Most patients begin to see improvement within 4–8 weeks, with continued progress over several months depending on acne severity. Early treatment is critical—addressing inflammation promptly, avoiding picking, and seeking timely medical care are the best ways to prevent acne scarring.

Advanced Scar Treatment Options

Once active acne is controlled—typically after 8–12 weeks of treatment—we can begin advanced scar treatments like microneedling and PRP (platelet-rich plasma). PRP helps stimulate collagen and improve healing, often enhancing the results of microneedling for acne scars. While microneedling is primarily used for acne scarring, it can also serve as maintenance for those without visible scarring, improving texture, promoting collagen production, and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Once acne is under control, these treatments can be safely combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as laser therapy and peels, to improve overall skin tone and texture.

The Lucid Protocol for Acne

Our AM, PM, and acne-specific routines are the same products our dermatologists and patients use, with great results.

They’re designed to deliver real results at home—maintaining clear skin, reducing flare-ups, and extending the benefits of in-office and prescription treatments month after month.

Building the Right Daily Routine

A consistent routine with gentle cleansing, targeted active ingredients, moisturizing, and sun protection works best for acne-prone skin. We recommend avoiding heavy oils, pore-clogging ingredients, and harsh scrubs, as they can worsen acne and irritation. Our skincare specialists will help you identify which ingredients to avoid and which actives will support your treatment goals.

I found out about Lucid after some research, and decided to come in after seeing many positive reviews. I met with Ms. Sana Chowdhury, PA, who is amazing! My main concerns were acne and visible hyperpigmentation I’d been dealing with for years. I was put on a regimen that led to major improvements in both issues in just a few months. My acne is under control and the dark hyperpigmentation I’d had for many years is almost completely gone. Staff is also super friendly and helpful. I’m very pleased with my experience and results so far, highly recommend.
